Jan Nederveen Pieterse, speaker

Jan Nederveen Pieterse will explore how art and globalization as well as art and architecture spread, whom art serves, and how art patronage changes over time. Modern times brought accelerations of globalization and of art forms and their international radius. Contemporary art is a salient part of contemporary times: what does it tell us about contemporary globalization? Because of its expressive and public character art reveals globalization. How do developments in the art world parallel developments in globalization and how do they deviate? If contemporary art is part of global collective reflexivity, what does it reflect? Most talk is about the art market more than about art, just as in globalization most talk is about market forces rather than about actual ramifications of connectivity. There are many strands to the story—the influx of new buyers, art prices going through the roof, the art world going mega, big bucks art squeezing museums, and most of all, multi-directionality and the radical decentering of the art world.

WHAP!—the West Hollywood Aesthetics and Politics lecture series—was launched in the Fall of 2011, and is co-hosted by the city of West Hollywood and the MA Program in Aesthetics & Politics.
